Same, Different, Or DISAPPEARED! Experiments with Color

Transition Song: The Circle Time Song

Vocabulary And Basic Concepts:  same/different, disappear/ed, experiment, because What/Where/Who/Why questions,  progressive -ing, past tense -ed, labeling colors.

Miss Carrie she noticed that a lot of our friends were mixing colors last week.  Some of them mixed paint and some of them mixed colored water.  When they mixed red and yellow, it made orange.  When they mixed blue and yellow, it made green.  When they mixed red and blue, it made purple.  Miss Carrie wondered what would happen if we drew with lots of different colors on paper, and then put a color filter on top of the drawings, what would happen?  Would the colors we drew with look the same or different, or would the color disappear?  Hmmm.

So we drew pictures on a big piece of paper.  We wrote our names.  Then Miss Carrie passed out color filters in different shapes.  We put them on top of our drawings.  Guess what happened?

Colors changed!  Colors disappeared!  We had so much fun looking at the different results of our experiment.

DO THIS AT HOME:  Mix paint, mix colored water, or do artwork and look at it through different filters (sunglasses, 3-d glasses will work).  Talk about experiment and guess what will happen. Emphasize same and different.

COLOR DAY!

Hi, Friends!  Today, we have TWO books I am going to read about colors.  And a color song.

Now, look around your house?  Do you see any colors?  Let's go on a color hunt! I wonder what colors you will find?  Hmmmm.

You could choose to take pictures or draw a picture of all the colors you find. Have your grown ups email them or bring your picture to school when you come back.  We can talk about the colors you find and see if we can find them in our classroom, too.

Happy color hunting!

April Week 3: The Color Of Science

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts: big, little, I see it, I don't see it, look, letters, numbers, shapes, colors, drawing, appear/disappear, curve/straight

Transition Song:  The Circle Song by The Kiboomers

This week, we did science.  We drew shapes, wrote our names, wrote numbers, and colors on a very big piece of paper. Coloring while laying on our tummies strengthens core and works on grip.  Miss Carrie brought out shapes with color filters in them. We looked through the color filters to see if the colors we drew changed colors or disappeared.

DO THIS AT HOME:  Color together, talk about what you are coloring, shapes, straight or curved lines.  If you have access to color filters, it is a fun activity, but not necessary.

January Week 2: Draw a Map

Vocabulary an Basic Concepts:  Up/down, front/back big/little, over/under, curve/straight, draw, house, street, neighborhood, trees, mailbox, dog, school, store, neighborhood helpers, What questions, Where questions, present progressive -ing, plural -s, past tense -ed, environmental print such as fast food or grocery store signs, shapes.

Transition Song: Colors by The Learning Station.

This week, Miss Carrie showed us a picture of her house on the Apple TV.  It looked like a rectangle with a triangle on top. Then she used Google Maps to show us a picture of her street.  It looked like she took the picture from an airplane in the sky.  She showed us our school and the door we go in if we came in cars, and the door we came in if we came on the bus.  She showed streets and stores.

Then Miss Carrie rolled out a BIG  piece of paper.  It covered the whole rug.  We were going to draw our own map.  We drew our house and street.  We talked about places near our house.  Miss Carrie has a McDonalds near her house so she drew a McDonalds sign.  Some of us drew trampolines and swings.  We drew trees and streets.  We drew curved lines and straight lines. We talked about what was near our house.

(Drawing while laying on your tummy promotes trunk support and is recommended by our district physical therapists. We had to keep reminding children to get on their tummies.)

DO THIS AT HOME:  pull our paper and get on the floor.  You could make a map of the room, your house, your back yard, or your neighborhood.  Talk about your drawings.  If the house ends up being on fire or has a dragon on top, that is okay (apparently, my house caught fire from a dragon on top of it), just go with it.  Talk about colors, straight lines, curved lines, and shapes.

January Week 3: Dance, Dance, Dance

phoneme: /d/

Transition Song: Colors by The Learning Station.  This week we started singing without the music so we could adapt the colors to what the children were wearing.

Materials:  Laminated letter D, Scarves, jingle bells, music

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts:  dance, What questions, head, neck, shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist, hand, front/back, hip, leg, knee, feet, high/low, fast/slow, jump, sway, stomp, spin or twirl, wave, flap

Pre-literacy:  This week we traced our letter D by driving our fingers and making car noises.  Then we danced our fingers around the letter D.

Miss Carrie announced that we would dance for Large Group.  We had to decide on at least 2 body parts to move.  We waved arms and kicked legs. We stomped feet, we swayed our hips, shrugged our shoulders, and shook our head.  Miss Carrie brought scarves and bells.  We shook bells and waved scarves.  We threw the scarves in the air.  The music was fast and slow, popular songs, blue grass, big band, and soundtracks.  After each song, we talked to our teachers about What body part we moved.

DO THIS AT HOME:  Turn on your favorite music and start moving!  Talk about what body parts you are moving and how you are moving them.  Use props.  Take pictures and look at them.  Save a few to show other family members and help your child tell the others what they were doing.  You could even print a few pictures to make a book.  Don't be surprised if it becomes a favorite book.
