October Week 4: Good To Eat

Title:  Good To Eat

Phoneme: /g/

Vocabulary and concepts: apples, banana, grapes, broccoli, peas, carrots, peanut butter, hot dogs, spaghetti, ice cream, gummy bears, popcorn, ice cream, milk, chocolate milk, juice, negation (like/not like), thumbs, up/down, hot/cold, yummy, delicious, eat/drink, salty/sweet.

Transition Song: Five Little Ghosts.  Practice counting forwards 1-5 and backwards 5-1.

Pre-literacy: Draw the letter G.  Draw half a circle, not a frown.  Go across the middle and then down.  What sound does the letter G make? g-g-g.  Ghost, grapes, girl, goodbye.

This week we discussed foods that are good to eat.  Miss Carrie showed pictures of fruits like apples, bananas, watermelon and grapes.  We looked at pictures of vegetables like broccoli, peas, and carrots.  We looked at prepped foods like peanut butter, hot dogs, spaghetti, and hamburgers, and fries.  We looked at things to drink like milk, chocolate milk, and juice.  We looked at treats like gummy bears, popcorn, and ice cream.

Everyone gave thumbs up or thumbs down and said if they liked the food or did not like the food.  Then we looked around to see who liked the same things or did not like the same things.  We talked about how it is okay that our friends did not like the same foods we did.  Miss Carrie does NOT like peas or peanut butter.  Miss Carrie likes tomatoes.  Miss Jeana does not like tomatoes.  Miss Julie likes spaghetti.

Talk about the foods you are eating at home and who likes them. Label foods at the grocery store. Consider making a grocery list out of pictures to take to the store.  Find out what is the favorite food of every member of your family.

October Week 2: LEAF MAN!

For Large Group this week, Miss Carrie introduced LEAF MAN! (Say his name in your very best superhero voice.)  Leaf Man is a book by Lois Ehlert.  She uses actual photographs of autumn leaves to create pictures of things that LEAF MAN sees as he flies around on the wind. Lois also illustrated one of Miss Carrie's favorite books Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

Concepts and Vocabulary:  colors, heavy/light, float, blow, toss, throw, animals and their sounds, yes, nose, arms, legs, tail, beak, wind, tree, fall, up/down, fast/slow, big/little, What questions, farm, vegetables, fruit, trees, lake, river.

First we read the story about LEAF MAN and tried to guess what the pictures were about.

We found a picture of leaves that looked like carrots, potatoes, and cabbages.

Another picture looked like a cow.

Then came the best part.  Miss Carrie brought a box of leaves and threw them all over the floor!  We played in the leaves, threw leaves in the air, piled them on teachers' heads, talked about colors, and if leaves were heavy or light.

As you go about this week, look for leaves. What color are they?  Are they up in the tree or down on the ground?  Which leaves are big and which are little?  Do you like to throw leaves?  Miss Carrie has a lot of trees at her house.  She likes to jump in a great pile of leaves.
