Yummy Yucky (aka Things We Can Eat and Things We Shouldn't)

Transition Song: The Gobble Gobble by Nooshi

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts:  (toys around the room), spaghetti, worms, blueberries, crayons, soup, soap, sandwiches, sand, cookies, coffee, chocolate sauce, hot sauce, apple pie, mud, burgers, boogers, eggs, earwax, fish sticks, fish food, ice cream, spicy, crunchy, yummy/yucky, hot/cold, I like it/Don't like it), negation, descriptive words.

This week, Miss Carrie read the book Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli.

The baby in this books tries foods that are yummy. But then they try things that are yucky aka things that we don't eat.  We talked about what we like and what we don't like.  We talked about where we should NOT put our fingers (noses, ears, mouths).  If we do that it might make our teachers and friends sick.  Teachers will ask us to wash our hands with soap if we put our fingers in our noses, ears, or mouths.

Then everyone looked around the room for one, small thing we should not put in our mouths.  Glue, markers, puzzle pieces, pretend foods, cars, baby items, blocks, and animals were brought to the rug so we could show our friends and talk about what we should not put in our mouth.

DO THIS AT HOME: Make a game of it.  Find items that you can eat and items you shouldn't.  Put your child in charge of asking "Yummy or Yucky?"  Talk about why it doesn't go in your mouth.  Make sure you end with a treat you can put in your mouth.  Be sure to enjoy your treat or snack together, talking about Yummy and how much you like it.

I Like It! I Don't Like it!

Transition Song: The Gobble Gobble Song by Nooshi.

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts: What questions, like/don't like, labeling food items, thumbs up/thumbs down, hot/cold

This week, Miss Carrie brought a lot of pictures of foods.  There were fruits and vegetables.  There were breakfast foods and dinner foods. There were pictures of sweet treats.

We took turns showing our friends the pictures.  What is it? Do you like it?  We could say "I like it!" and give a thumbs up.  Or we could say "I don't like it!" and give a thumbs down.

Guess what we discovered?  It is okay if you like a food and others don't like it.  Miss Carrie said that she doesn't like peanut butter or peas.  Miss Carrie loves tomatoes, popcorn, and french fries.  Miss Kazia doesn't like jello, but she does like chicken noodle soup.  Miss Jeana doesn't like tomatoes, but she does like peanut butter.

Miss Carrie keeps tasting food she doesn't like in case she changes her mind.

DO THIS AT HOME:  this is great conversation for the dinner table.  What do you like?  What don't you like? Did you ever not like something that you like now?  did you change your mind? Practice labeling the foods that you eat.

Food Or Not Food

Transition Song: What Does The Turkey Say (chorus and 1st verse only) by Nooshi.

Note: We sing the chorus and the 1st verse only.  We sing it without the music since the music is so fast.  Also, we beat a rhythm by tapping our knees and then clapping.

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts: food/not food, legos, glue, blocks, cars, play dough, markers, cup, spoon, apple, orange, banana, grape, carrot, hamburger, bread, strawberry, egg.

This week, Miss Carrie brought a bag full of items we couldn't see.  She showed us how to close our eyes and pic something out of the bag.  Is it food or not food?  Can we put it in our mouths?  There were things we should never put in our mouths: legos, glue, blocks, cars,  play dough, markers, cup, spoon.  If we put these things in our mouth, our teachers have to wash them or throw them away.  They are not food.  There were also things that were food such as banana, strawberry, egg, apple, orange, grape, carrot, hamburger, bread.  Those items are food and we can eat them at home.  But the ones at school are just pretend.  We practiced how we could pretend to eat them without them touching our mouths. We can also pretend to use cups and spoons during Work Time without them touching our mouths.

We also talked again about how if we put our fingers in our mouths and then touch toys, that can make people sick.  If we put fingers in our noses, that can make people sick, too.  The teachers ask us to wash our hands with soap if we put our fingers in our noses and mouths.  Miss Carrie does not want to get sick.

DO THIS AT HOME:  talk about what is food and what is not food.  What can we put in our mouths? What is food and what is not food? Get the whole family involved with this game.
