January Week 1: Draw A Map

Phoneme: /d/

Transition Song: Colors by The Learning Station.

This is the song I usually use, but then I found this one and want to use it as well:

Materials: laminated letter D, large drawing paper, crayons.

Vocabulary and Basic Concepts:  map, draw, next to, near, road, house, mountains, store, sign, Where, Who.

Preliteracy:  Let's draw the letter D.  Start at the top and draw down.  Go back to the top and draw around.  Who has a /d/ sound in their name?  What words have the /d/ sound? Dog, duck, dinner, draw, down.

This week Miss Carrie showed the class a map of our classroom.  She talked about how we could tell what different parts of the classroom were based on the parts of the picture.  We found the tables where we sit for Small Group and Snack Time.  We found the rug where we sit for Large Group.

Then Miss Carrie brought out a BIG, LONG piece of white paper.  It nearly covered the whole rug.  We talked about drawing a  map of our neighborhood.  Miss Carrie lives in a long house and her yard has really big trees.  There are horses near her house. She drew these on the paper along with a street and a mailbox.  Then she handed out crayons and everyone got on their tummies to draw on the paper (drawing while laying on your tummy helps build trunk stability). We walked about what was near or next to our houses.  Mountains?  Library? Store?  We talked about what was in our backyards.  Garden?  Flowers?  Trees? Trampoline? Where are they?  Who lives in your house?

This child drew the whole family.

A rainbow above the house.

This child drew her bedroom and her baby brother.

This child drew me!  See the bangs and the glasses?

DO THIS AT HOME:  Draw a map of a room in your house or of the back yard.  Label what you draw.
